Pre-Op

So this is how the conversation went:

"Doctor, I'm having concerns about Athena's adenoid surgery."

"Well, we don't have to do it."

"You mean there is no reason to do it?"

"No. It's completely elective."

"Well, aren't her adenoids swollen and problematic."

"Hmmm. I really can't tell. We'll just keep an eye on them and if they turn out to be a problem then we can decide what to do at a later date."

"Okay."

Well, I wasn't going to insist we do it, now was I? And he did not give me one compelling reason to do it. So forget it! A tympanoplasty in both ears is enough of a surgery to worry about let alone the pain of adenoidectomy recovery, risk of infection and bleeding, etc.

Plus, now she does not have to have blood work done prior to the surgery. I was so dreading that. Last week when I had my blood drawn, I asked the technician how they take blood from a frightened and uncooperative three year old. "We hold them down" was her answer.

So, the adenoids are staying.

Unless my clock is wrong, you posted tomorrow, hmmm . . .

That's awesome news for Athena, I knew you would do what you thought was best.

Such a protective mama! I wouldn't want to be that doctor that takes credit for suggesting a surgery that could go awry.

Oh...it posted at like 12:11 am EST. I need to change that.

I'm so jealous of parents who've never had to hold their panicked kiddo down for labs. She doesn't fight anymore, which makes it worse somehow, the learned helplessness. I'm glad you guys don't have to go through that.

Sounds like a good decision to me. The doctor sure didn't try to sell it. LOL!

I'm glad you decided not to get the adenoids removed. I know you have enough on your plate already and it doesn't sound like they are a pressing problem. Good move (and good luck with the surgery you do have to deal with.)

We're in the same boat - waiting on the adenoids to see if it's going to be necessary!

Well, that was easy.

Speaking of blood draws I have to take BOTH my boys in for sticks today. :( They don't know yet. I didn't want to tell E before school.

Like Kyla, I'm glad you don't have to do it yet.

I am glad you finally got a reason (or lack there of) for her adenoid surgery and you have made the decision that is best for her.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous. Our doctor made such a big deal about waiting for Broderick to be about 3 and 1/2-so he was old enough to reason with when it came to eating/drinking after surgery. A 3 1/2 year old understands bribery a bit better than a 2 year old. "Drink this and I will buy you a toy". :)

Your VERY opinated pediatric nurse practitioner cousin had shut her mouth VERY tightly on this adenoid topic on purpose.

Now that you are not doing the surgery, I can breathe a sigh of relief and tell you that I did not think she needed it done... I did not want to jump on my soapbox, but I was highly suspicious on whether or not she really needed them out...ENTs love T&As. (tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy.) They are quick, simple and yield a nice bill...

Obviously some kids really need them- a necessary procedure...some kids, not so much.

If she really needed her adenoids out, they would have already been taken out most likely...

Didnt really seem like Athena did. But doctors LOVE an add on extra reimbursment from the insurance company...
So I think it is the right choice to leave them right where they are!!!

(Sigh of relief...)
